Flows out of Lake Tahoe, through the canyon along I-80, through the middle of Reno and Sparks, and eventually ends up in Pyramid lake. There are several class II+ sections below the lake and before the canyon, the canyon is fun class IV-, and class II through town. Boaters of all skill levels usually float through town on wednesdays and when the river is high the canyon will be full of groups enjoying the water. Besides that we have a great whitewater park in downtown Reno and a friendlier one in Sparks. The truckee truly has something for everyone (even squirtboaters).
The forks of the American River contain some of the most famous runs in the world, from the Royal Gorge to the chili bar play run. Just a little ways over the pass on I-80 you can go creeking on Chamberlains or Giant Gap, surf the first threat wave on chili bar, and park-n-play at barking dog wave. When it is cold in Reno we head over to warm Cali to enjoy the American River.
Northwest of Reno, a little past Quincy California is the Feather River Drainage. Like the American it is choc full of classic runs, Indian Creek, Rock, Shasta, Middle Fork, South Branch, etc. AW has secured releases on the Feather but it flows at boatable “fish” flows year around. Providing fun boulder creeking when there is nothing else running.
