Floaters could get a new boat ramp, parking lot and other improvements near Danskin Bridge on the South Fork of the Boise River, and a Boise fly-fishing club is seeking donations to help make it happen this year.
The project is a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and several other agencies and groups. It would include a new two-lane concrete boat ramp, parking for up to 26 vehicles, a vault toilet, four picnic tables and an information kiosk.
The ramp would be placed about a quarter-mile upstream from the existing ramp at the Danskin Bridge.
The ramp is popular for anglers and whitewater boaters who float the “canyon” stretch of the South Fork of the Boise River. The South Fork from Anderson Ranch Dam to Danskin Bridge is also a popular fishing area.
The existing ramp would be retired and rehabilitated with grass after the project is completed.
The Forest Service’s Mountain Home Ranger District is planning a two-phase project that is expected to cost about $58,500.
The Forest Service has about $38,500 for the first phase, which includes the ramp and gravel parking lot. Work is expected to be done in the fall, according to Clayton Nalder, Forest Service fish biologist and project leader.
Phase two includes a new outhouse, picnic tables and information signs, which would have to wait until the Forest Service could apply for grants to complete the project.
The Boise Valley Fly Fishermen has set a goal of raising $20,000 so both phases can be done at one time.
The club is leading the effort in memory of Ken Magee, a longtime local fly fisherman who died in October. Magee was a founding member of the Boise Valley Fly Fishermen, as well as its first president.
“BVFF decided to establish a special fund to honor his accomplishments and dedication,” club president Monte McClendon said.
The club is trying to raise the money by July 15.
If funds aren’t raised, Nalder said completion of the second phase would probably be pushed to spring, which would add to the project’s cost because equipment would have to be brought in twice.
