Haley making it look easy on Sketchy Left…..

Warm water and decent levels greeted 23 paddlers last week at the Kawartha Whitewater Paddler’s Fun Run Series Week 2. There’s a different event for each week of the series and while some aren’t exactly crowd pleasers (like the Marathon), others are. Last week’s was a favourite, the Ball Drop. It involves all paddlers lining up below the dam until the start is signalled, when well over 100 small plastic balls of
various colours are dropped into the river from a highway overpass. The result is part boatercross, part scavenger hunt and part guerrilla warfare as opposing boaters scramble to grab as many balls for themselves as possible while pushing
other boaters out of the way and navigating their way down the rapids in a kayak with its skirt pulled to facilitate ball collection. All that being said, getting the skirt back on at the last possible minute is a good idea if you want to keep your balls to yourself and avoid a swim when heading over the falls at the bottom. Different boaters use different strategies but there’s never a clear winner till the points are totalled up on land at the end, when the different values for the various coloured balls are revealed. The winner for the night was Issac, getting 7 points for the win, followed by Rob Irwin with 6 with Leah and with 5. Overall standings for the series to date can be found below. A number of KWPer’s checked

out Sketchy Left prior to the event, for the most part running clean with the exception of our friend Issac, who despite his flashy 1st showing in the Ball Drop didn’t quite make his line down the chute and ended up pinned against a well known rock on the left side at the bottom of the run. Fortunately, his pride was the only thing that was seriously injured.

Taking care of the meal for Week 2 was Manny and Brett with a crowd pleasing Indian styled chicken and rice dish with a side of Nan bread, finished off with a selection of Kawartha Dairy ice cream. So far the bar has been raised pretty high for the food portion of the Series, we’ll have to see what Week 3 brings. It all starts around 6:00 Thursday, July 5, when everyone is welcome to come show their stuff and have some fun….hope to see you there.
