Week One of the KWP-World Kayak Fun Run
Challenge is in the books and despite a severe weather warning from Environment Canada 28 paddlers showed up to kick off the series. By the time most boaters were ready to gear up the weather had cleared and stayed that way for the rest
of the night. Considering the lower than usual levels we’ve been experiencing this year the water was excellent, creating play waves and putting a few more inches of water on top of the notoriously rocky Burleigh Falls river bed.
After a couple of warm up laps down the river, it was time for the event and it was quickly decided we’d be having a boatercross! Basically, everyone lines up at the top of the river, shotgun start, every boater for themselves down to the bottom of the falls. As usual, the pack was tight at the start but started to thin at the midway point, when last year’s overall winner Zack Fiddis was unable to hold his lead and was overtaken by our boy wonder, champion kayak tosser Jacob Slobodian. He didn’t give up that lead and finished first overall with a clean line over the falls. Zack came in a close second followed by C-1er Seamus. Complete results will be posted after next week’s event.
Lots of daylight meant paddlers had time to run again, play at the bottom or run Sketchy Left, Burleigh Falls notorious left chute, a great training ground for the creeker side of things that offers up a large range of lines and conditions.
Dinner followed, kicking off the Fun Run Cook Off Challenge, served up this week by Steph Reeder, who cooked up an excellent Louisiana-inspired feed of shrimp, corn on the cob and sausage. Awards and prizes followed, with lots of
appreciative KWP’ers taking home excellent World Kayak swag.
Overall, a GREAT kick off to the Series and as an added bonus we were happy to welcome two new young members to the club, Brock and Paige….great to see you out for the Fun Run and hope to see you at lots of club events down the road.
Next Fun Run is Wednesday, June 27, event to be announced that night!
