We lost a true friend and paddling buddy to many of us. Allen Satcher passed away after a terrible accident in California on Sunday.
“Allen Michael Satcher, 28, was among a group of six kayakers in Cherry Creek when his kayak got caught in a whirlpool near the third drop at Waterfall Alley” said sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Wilson. His group tried unsuccessfully to revive Allen after recovering him.
For many or us here, this especially hits home. I have paddled with Allen on several occasions on different rivers. Most recently was the Red Barn run on the Kalama. Allen worked for next Adventure serving all of us in the Portland community, so not only does this hit us as a paddling family hard, it hits the family at Next Adventure even harder I am sure. Allen also worked for NRS. “It’s an inherent risk in the sport,” said David Blue, a spokesman for NRS that sponsored Allen. Allen was loved by many. Tyson Ruff who lives and paddles near me says:”It hurts,” Tyson often kayaked with Allen on the Kalama River when the two were in their early 20s. “We both learned to kayak together, and he ended up dying doing it.”
This hits especially home for me as Allen is from Longview/Kelso where I live.
