The water level of the Selway River when we launched at Paradise on July 28 was perfect at about 1.85 feet.
It was just enough cushion over most of the rocky parts of the river to make it an easier float with less raft dragging that is so common at the end of the season. Floaters who launched out of the permit season starting Aug. 1 probably found great conditions, too, in this high water and huge snowpack year.
Fishing on the Selway through the wilderness was fantastic with 25 to 40 catch and release fish days. Cutthroats ranged 12 to 17 inches. The fish were hitting lures like the Thomas Buoyant Lure for spin anglers and yellow stimulators for fly anglers.
